Mexican teacher arrested on drug trafficking charges following luggage swap at Mexico City airport
A Mexican teacher traveling to Brazil to attend World Youth Day was jailed after being accused of drug trafficking. The arrest occurred after authorities found ten kilograms of cocaine in a suitcase checked under her name at Mexico City International Airport. The discovery followed a series of irregularities with her luggage resulting from the loss of her passport during a layover in Lima, Peru.
The life of a Mexican educator took a dramatic turn during what was meant to be a religious trip. Ángel de María Soto Zárate, a teacher by profession, had planned a journey to South America with the primary goal of attending World Youth Day, a Catholic event scheduled to take place in Brazil. During the massive gathering, the teacher hoped to meet Pope Francis.
However, her travel itinerary suffered significant setbacks long before reaching her final destination. On the way to the South American country, the aircraft carrying the professional made a layover in Lima, the capital of Peru. It was during her stay at that airport terminal that the teacher realized she had lost her passport, an indispensable document to continue her journey to Brazil. Faced with this unexpected situation, she had to return to Mexico City.
Back in the Mexican capital, after landing at the International Airport, Soto Zárate went to the baggage claim area to retrieve the belongings she had checked in. Upon picking up the suitcase, the educator noticed that the bag was not hers. Even though the luggage did not belong to her personal items, the assigned baggage claim tag matched the one on her travel receipt.
Faced with the discrepancy between the tracking tag and the item delivered, the teacher decided to report the anomaly to airport authorities. Minutes after submitting the report regarding the irregularity, terminal staff informed the passenger that they had located her belongings within the airport facilities. However, upon verifying the found suitcase, the teacher realized that this was not her luggage either and did not recognize it as hers.
The situation escalated in severity when staff proceeded to inspect the inside of the delivered bag. During the formal search of the suitcase, authorities discovered a total of ten kilograms of cocaine inside. The discovery of the illicit cargo within the luggage formally linked to the educator's baggage claim number immediately led to the intervention of the relevant authorities.
As a direct consequence of this discovery in the suitcase linked to her flight record, Ángel de María Soto Zárate was formally charged with drug trafficking. Following the filing of charges for the substance found at the capital's airport terminal, the teacher was sent to and incarcerated in the women's prison located in the city of Tepic, in the state of Nayarit.
Thus, a trip planned for personal and religious reasons ended in criminal proceedings. The loss of her document during the layover in Lima and the subsequent luggage mix-up involving the same baggage claim tag number at the Mexico City airport ultimately linked the Mexican teacher to ten kilograms of cocaine and led to her transfer to a correctional facility.
