Day of the Young Combatant Leaves Pedestrian in Critical Condition and Severe Incidents Across Multiple Santiago Communes
A wave of violence unleashed during the commemoration of the Day of the Young Combatant left a woman shot and in life-threatening condition in San Bernardo as its most severe outcome. The incident was part of a series of riots, burning barricades, and armed clashes that paralyzed key areas across at least five communes in the Metropolitan Region between Sunday night and early Monday morning.
The most severe incident during the overnight unrest occurred in the commune of San Bernardo, specifically in the vicinity of the Hospital El Pino metro station. Around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, a young woman leaving the subway station unexpectedly found herself caught in the middle of a violent clash between police forces and a group of individuals setting up flaming barricades to block public roads.
While attempting to hurriedly flee the conflict zone to protect herself, the victim was struck by a bullet in the abdomen, which exited through her back. The severity of the wound required her immediate transfer to nearby Hospital El Pino, where the medical team confirmed that the young woman remains hospitalized in life-threatening condition due to the gravity of her injury.
The area surrounding the healthcare facility and the metro station turned into a high-tension scene for several hours. Carabineros Public Order Control officers had to deploy and intervene with a water cannon truck to contain the protesters and deter the individuals who were blocking vehicular traffic. The prolonged disturbances forced authorities to implement preventive public transit detours to protect passengers and restore mobility in the area.
The violent event in San Bernardo was not an isolated incident, but rather part of a pattern of simultaneous unrest across various strategic points in the capital. In the commune of Cerro Navia, the violence took on a high-risk nature at the intersection of Huelén and Mapocho streets. At that junction, the erection of barricades escalated into direct clashes with police units arriving to clear the road, with live rounds even being fired directly at the officers.
Meanwhile, the commune of Estación Central saw high levels of conflict in two key areas. In Villa Francia, specifically at the intersection of 5 de Abril and 7 de Octubre streets, unidentified individuals disrupted traffic with bonfires and attacked Carabineros using blunt objects and incendiary devices. Simultaneously, in the Villa Portales area, a group of hooded individuals clashed with police forces and halted traffic on the General Velázquez highway, blocking one of the Metropolitan Region's most critical transit arteries.
In the commune of Peñalolén, attention centered on the Lo Hermida neighborhood. Protesters completely cut off traffic on Grecia Avenue, between Tobalaba and Américo Vespucio avenues, by setting up burning structures. To restore the thoroughfare's operation, police personnel had to conduct continuous sweeps with water cannon trucks until dispersing the crowds obstructing vehicular traffic.
Urban violence also hit the northern sector of the capital, specifically in the Parinacota neighborhood of the Quilicura commune. There, protesters blocked traffic with burning barricades and tossed a Hyundai Accent—which had an active stolen vehicle report—into the flames. The vehicle was incinerated amid the protests, requiring joint efforts by municipal personnel and a Carabineros water cannon to extinguish the fire and clear the road.
Despite the magnitude of the unrest and the attacks recorded in San Bernardo, Cerro Navia, Estación Central, Peñalolén, and Quilicura, authorities have not yet released a consolidated general report regarding the total number of arrests or the extent of property damage incurred during the unrest.
