Kidney failure is a silent disease that can progress without clear warning signs until up to 80% of kidney function has been destroyed. Medical specialists warn about common mistakes in hydration, excess sodium, excessive consumption of over-the-counter medications, and a lack of preventive checkups that overload these vital organs.

The kidneys work continuously 24 hours a day to filter blood and eliminate toxins from the body. However, their deterioration often goes unnoticed due to the absence of discomfort in the early stages. In fact, more than 80% of patients who end up on hemodialysis never knew they had a kidney problem until the disease was already advanced. For this reason, preventive medicine emphasizes the importance of two simple annual exams: a basic urinalysis to detect protein leakage and a blood creatinine test to evaluate kidney filtration in time.

One of the most frequent triggers of kidney damage is undetected chronic dehydration. The feeling of thirst is not a preventive guide, but rather a late sign that the body's cells are already suffering from a lack of water. To determine individual fluid requirements, it is recommended to multiply body weight in kilograms by 30; the result represents the minimum number of milliliters to consume per day (for example, a person weighing 70 kilograms requires at least 2,100 milliliters or 2.1 liters). A healthy habit consists of drinking a large glass of water on an empty stomach upon waking up and ensuring the consumption of 75% of the daily total before 5 p.m.

Excessive sodium consumption represents another direct threat to blood pressure stability and kidney tissue. Added salt in cooking is not the only source of risk, but also the sodium hidden in ultra-processed products, such as cold cuts, commercial breads, instant soups, canned foods, cheeses, crackers, and soft drinks. To counteract this impact, specialists advise replacing salt with natural spices such as rosemary, turmeric with black pepper, or mustard powder, and increasing the intake of foods rich in potassium and magnesium, such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, seeds, and nuts.

The indiscriminate use of everyday medications and vitamin supplements also impairs kidney function cumulatively. Frequent consumption of over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, diclofenac, or naproxen gradually destroys kidney filters. Likewise, excessive doses of supplements can prove harmful: the abuse of vitamin C promotes the formation of kidney stones, while excessive levels of vitamin D dangerously increase blood calcium, generating toxicity in the kidneys.

On the other hand, high blood pressure ranks among the leading causes of heart attacks, strokes, and kidney failure. More than 90% of people do not monitor their blood pressure regularly, overlooking that it is usually an asymptomatic condition. Starting at age 40, it is essential to measure blood pressure at least once a year. Added to this is the care of the gut microbiota: an imbalance in digestive bacteria triggers chronic inflammation. Maintaining healthy gut flora through the daily intake of fermented foods such as plain yogurt, kefir, or kombucha helps protect the immune response and kidney function.

Finally, there is a little-known risk linked to diet: the consumption of starfruit, also called carambola. This food contains high levels of oxalate and a toxin called caramboxin. While in healthy people its consumption should be only occasional and never in concentrated juices, in patients with kidney failure or on dialysis it is potentially fatal, capable of causing vomiting, persistent hiccups, seizures, severe confusion, and severe poisoning requiring emergency hemodialysis.
