Dramatic rescue in the pool: A coach leaps into the water to save an unconscious swimmer
Swimmer Anita Álvarez experienced a distressing moment when she lost consciousness underwater after completing her new free routine. Faced with the lack of an immediate response from the lifeguard team, her coach, Spaniard Andrea Fuentes, did not hesitate to leap into the pool to carry out a high-stakes rescue. Following a dramatic resuscitation process after going two minutes without breathing, the athlete has made a satisfactory recovery and is already looking ahead to her next competitive challenges.
Drama unfolded during the event the moment Anita Álvarez finished her free routine. Upon completing the performance, the athlete began to sink progressively into the depths of the water, without returning to the surface to catch her breath or receive the applause from the audience present. The scene immediately raised deep alarm among her team members, who instantly realized that the situation was abnormal and that the swimmer was facing a critical emergency.
Seeing the athlete motionless underwater, team coach Andrea Fuentes, a Spaniard, urgently requested the intervention of the lifeguards assigned to the venue. However, upon noticing that the rescue personnel were not reacting with the required speed, the coach made the firm decision to jump directly into the pool to intervene herself. In that moment of extreme tension, the coach held a single priority in mind: dive at top speed and reach the athlete's body before it hit the bottom of the pool. Upon managing to grab her in the depths, she experienced the immense physical difficulty of the maneuver due to the heavy weight of her soaked clothing.
While this tense event was taking place in the water, the official television broadcast decided not to air the distressing and shocking images unfolding live. Nevertheless, the severity of the sequence was thoroughly documented thanks to the work of an on-site photographer, who managed to capture snapshots of the harrowing underwater rescue led by the Spanish coach.
First aid measures began right inside the water. Andrea Fuentes turned the athlete's body onto her side to help her expel fluids and repeatedly tried to open her mouth so she could purge the trapped water. Faced with an initial lack of response, the coach proceeded to massage the swimmer's face and jaw area to achieve muscle relaxation that would allow air to enter, all while continuously speaking to her and pleading with her to react and breathe again.
The swimmer's medical condition was extremely severe after spending two agonizing minutes unconscious, completely deprived of oxygen and with water accumulated in her lungs. Her jaw remained clenched shut due to the rigidity of her physical collapse. To reverse this critical state, responders had to resort to intense pain stimulation by applying extreme pressure to her fingernail with the help of a pen or another rigid object. This action induced a shock of adrenaline sufficient for the athlete to suddenly snap back and regain consciousness.
Upon suddenly regaining consciousness after the adrenaline shock, the athlete reflected on the immense effort exerted during her performance prior to passing out. The exchange of feelings highlighted the physical limit to which the swimmer had pushed herself in her desire to perform at her absolute best, recalling the prior directive to give everything in the pool—though the fundamental premise remained that, above any athletic dedication, preserving life is what is truly crucial.
Currently, Anita Álvarez's health condition is progressing favorably. The athlete is now fully recovered from the collapse, taking the necessary rest to regain her strength following the harrowing ordeal. Despite the severity of the incident, the swimmer demonstrates strong determination and maintains her desire to return to competition tomorrow to stand alongside her teammates in the team final.
