Most serious cardiac events do not happen suddenly; rather, they are preceded by subtle warnings sent by the body days or weeks in advance. However, the tendency to attribute these symptoms to fatigue or digestive issues frequently delays medical care that could prove decisive.

In the prehospital care setting, a heart attack almost never occurs out of nowhere. The body usually sends clear signals days or even weeks before a major crisis unfolds. Despite this, a high percentage of people choose to dismiss these warnings or downplay them, believing they are irrelevant or rationalizing them as simple fatigue.

From the perspective of emergency response, Laura Torres, a paramedic and first aid specialist, points out that there is a recurring pattern among those who suffer these types of episodes. In emergency care, it is common to hear patients say they felt something strange, but thought it wasn't related to their heart. This misconception represents one of the most dangerous failures in the early recognition of the condition, given that the heart usually gives warning before a major event.

In light of this reality, cardiologists highlight three key manifestations that should not be ignored under any circumstances:

First, chest pressure. Heart discomfort does not always present as severe or unbearable pain. Frequently, people experience a weight or a feeling of tightness in the center of the chest. This symptom typically appears during activities such as walking fast, climbing stairs, or engaging in physical exertion, and tends to improve when the person rests. This dynamic indicates that the heart may not be receiving an adequate supply of blood during moments of activity.

Second, extreme fatigue. This condition is distinct from the usual tiredness of a daily routine. It manifests as deep exhaustion in which a person feels drained of energy even after resting, or when simple tasks like climbing stairs cause excessive fatigue. If this tiredness is new, unusual, and persists for several days, it constitutes a direct warning sign that should not be overlooked.

Third, radiating pain. Discomfort originating in the heart does not always remain fixed in the chest. It can radiate to the left arm, back, neck, jaw, or even the stomach. Due to this variability in location, many people mistake the discomfort for gastritis or a muscle issue, failing to realize it is a warning from the cardiovascular system that requires medical assistance.

When these symptoms manifest, especially if they occur simultaneously, the primary directive is to avoid any physical exertion and seek immediate medical attention.

The difference between addressing these warning signs in time or ignoring them lies in the outcome of the emergency: while some manage to react in time, others only realize the severity of the signals while being transported to the hospital. Experience in emergency care shows that listening to the body's alerts in a timely manner can mean the difference between a minor scare and a life-altering health event.

Along with recognizing these symptoms, there are daily habits that help protect long-term heart health. Key recommendations include continuous blood pressure monitoring, avoiding smoking, engaging in regular physical activity, maintaining adequate sleep, and keeping a healthy weight.
